A photograph is a document. For Paul Nicklen and Cristina Mittermeier, for instance, a picture of the sea life in the Bahamas doubles as an attempt to capture the beauty of marine life being threatened by Big Oil. For Anand Varma, a snapshot of a hummingbird or a parasite is a chance to celebrate the small wonders nature nurtures all over. For Campbell Addy, meanwhile, fashion spreads of Black models and intimate tableaus based on Bible stories are opportunities to rewrite into the cultural canon the beauty of the African diaspora. These celebrated photographers, alongside Krystle Wright, Dan Winters and Muhammed Muheisen, are the subjects of the first season of National Geographic’s Photographer, which boasts directors such as Sam Pollard, Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, and Pagan Danielle Harleman, among others. These probing documentaries tie the very tenets of photography—issues of framing and subject matter, say—to broader questions about visibility, representation, and advocacy with aplomb. For its expansive and eye-catching vision of the artistry of photography—for showing us that photos are made, not merely taken—and reminding us, in turn, of the importance of bearing witness to the world around us, Photographer wins a Peabody award.

The world-renowned photographers, who are influential in industries such as fashion, wildlife, conservation and more, include:
